Discovering the Hakkoda Mountains
The Hakkoda Mountains, located in the heart of Aomori Prefecture, are a breathtaking volcanic range known for their natural beauty, rich history, and year-round outdoor adventures. Unlike a single peak, “Hakkoda” refers to a group of about 18 volcanic mountains, with Mount Odake (1,585 meters) as the highest and most popular summit.
A Landscape of Seasons
Hakkoda is famous for its dramatic seasonal changes. In autumn, the mountains are ablaze with some of Japan’s most stunning fall colors. Winter transforms Hakkoda into a snowy wonderland, drawing skiers and snowboarders to its powdery slopes. The area is also home to the unique “Snow Monsters”—trees covered in thick layers of snow and ice, creating surreal, otherworldly shapes.
Hiking and Ropeway Adventures
Hiking in Hakkoda is accessible to beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. The main trail to Mount Odake takes about five hours, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Japan, and the distant Mount Iwaki. For a quicker ascent, the Hakkoda Ropeway cable car whisks visitors to the mountaintop, where shorter hikes and spectacular vistas await.
Onsen Bliss
Thanks to its volcanic origins, Hakkoda is a haven for onsen (hot springs). Sukayu Onsen is especially famous, known for its massive “Senninburo” bath and traditional wooden architecture. After a hike or ski session, soaking in these mineral-rich waters is the perfect way to relax and take in the mountain scenery.
History and Culture
Hakkoda is also remembered for the tragic Hakkoda Death March of 1902, when a military training exercise ended in disaster due to severe winter weather, inspiring novels and films.
